2024 Winter Break - University Housing Closedown

Fall Semester has flown by, and it's almost time for winter break.

Winter Break Closure

University Housing will CLOSE for fall semester at 4 p.m. ET Sunday, Dec. 22.

Late stays after 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 are NOT permitted - all students must leave University Housing prior to this closing time. If you are not able to leave campus by 4 p.m. ET Sunday , you will need to make alternative arrangements until you can leave.

Students who do not have a Break Access/Holiday Housing HFS Contract are expected to leave the buildings (you may leave your belongings in your room during the break, unless you are changing room assignments for spring semester). Students should not unplug their micro-fridges when they depart.

Please make your travel plans to and from State College with these dates in mind:

  • University housing CLOSES at 4 p.m. ET Sunday, Dec. 22

  • University housing OPENS at 8 a.m. ET Saturday, Jan. 11

Early arrivals prior to Saturday, Jan. 11 are not permitted - building access will not operate until 8 a.m. Students who arrive on campus prior to Jan. 11 will need to make alternative arrangements until University Housing opens.

2024 Winter Break Departure Survey

To assist in closedown, University Housing asks all students to fill out the 2024 Winter Break Departure Survey

Students are requested to complete the Departure Survey to assist the University with building closures for the break.

Winter Break Stays

Certain buildings remain open during the break periods. Reach out to the Housing Assignment Office to discuss what space is available for a permanent room assignment change. This will allow you to stay in your room during the two remaining closures. The cost of a Break Access/Holiday Housing HFS Contract is $1020, which will be billed to your LionPATH account ($510 is added to your fall account, and $510 will be added to your spring account). If the room you are currently assigned to is in a non-break building then you will have to move immediately and stay in that room for the remainder of the academic year. There will be no temporary housing for winter break.

Room Changes

Please refer to the Moving Out page for instructions for students who are changing to a new room assignment or not returning to Penn State for spring semester.

Traffic Advisory

Students are encouraged to depart from campus on Friday night or Sunday, due to the Penn State Football game vs. SMU scheduled for noon Saturday, Dec. 21. The Game Day Traffic Pattern will be in effect.

Students departing campus should expect heavy traffic getting to, from, and around campus on Saturday.

EAST HALLS RESIDENTS / LOT 82 PERMIT HOLDERS

For the students living in East Halls and students with a Lot 82 permit who must depart on Saturday, please note that access to Lot 82 student parking areas will be unavailable from approximately 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The following accommodations are in place for Saturday:

  • Lot 82 permit holders returning to park Saturday should park at the East Parking Deck. Tap your Penn State ID+ Card at the in-lane machines to enter and exit. Vehicles must be parked at Lot 82 by midnight Sunday night.

  • Parents, families, and anyone picking up a student at East Halls will only be able to park at the East Parking Deck. The parking fee is $2 for the first hour and $1 for the second hour, if parked less than two hours. If parked for additional time beyond the two hours, the $40 event parking rate will be charged. From 9:30 a.m. until approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, access to East Deck will only be available by traveling east on Park Avenue, from Atherton Street and then turning right on to Bigler Road. There will be no access to East Deck from 2 p.m. until the one-way outbound traffic pattern concludes following the end of the game. This corresponds with the Game Day Traffic Pattern.
